DIY - RSD Bonnet Vent

RSD are a motorsport company who have modified the Hyundai Coupe and Accent for rallying. Some of their rally parts are available to buy. Here we can see how to fit a bonnet vent...nurse pass me the angle grinder!

Thanks to Dean (DJP) for the detailed pics and description.

Here's my good pal 'G' and he's holding the thing we're about to fit. (photo)

First things first. We masked off the bonnet area where the vent was going to go. We decided to leave the bonnet on the car to do the work, so, we covered the engine bay with a large sheet. We also used paper to mask the whole bonnet and partial windscreen. A simple template was made from cardboard.

A small angle grinder was used plus tin snips to cut into the corners.

Once we O.K.'d the fit, we removed the vent, filed the slot to remove any metal burrs, cleaned the inside of the bonnet skin and gave it a good old brushing of Silver Hamerite paint. Making sure to seal the edges and the inner skin. While we left that to dry, we began meshing the vent. I used alloy mesh from B&Q.

Well that's the first part finished. We can now get air in through the bonnet vent. Errmm...... it has to come out too though. At the moment it would do a great job of shooting up your reinforcement channels, (oooh err missus), and cooling you bonnet a treat. This is what we did.

The bottom of the pic was shot at a weird angle, so I've tried to show location at the top. We cut the slot from the piece which angles down to meet the sound proofing. Once the slot was cut, we filed the edges and glued some rubber trim around it to tidy it up. By the time the slot was completed, everything was dry so we cleaned the area, applied some 'No More Nails' to the vent, slotted in the vent, clamped it in place, removing any excess NMN. We then drilled holes around the vent, countersunk them and pop riveted the vent to the bonnet. All that remains is for the body shop to fill the countersunk holes, blend in the vent and spray my bonnet, which is all due on August 12th.
